Good morning everyone! And welcome again to this week’s Yu-Gi-Oh! Talk.

This week’s talk is about the Spirit that resides in the Millennium Puzzle. The Spirit has gone through many transformations throughout the five seasons of the Anime and the Manga. This week’s talk will be focussing on the Anime story line of the Spirit. So, the best place to start is at the beginning…

Season 0
This is where it all begins… Season 0 was originally only aired and released in Japan. Season 0 covers the backstory of all the main characters, and a couple of the episodes that happened towards the end of this season were rereleased at the start of Season 1.
Did you know that “Yu-Gi-Oh!” wasn’t originally the name of the trading card game? In Season 0 of the Anime the card game the show is based around during the other seasons was called “Magic and Wizards” then later referred by the characters as “Duel Monsters”. “Yu-Gi-Oh!” was one of the names that the Spirit of the puzzle was called. The Spirit of the puzzle is the spirit of a master gambler from ancient Egypt, and the meaning of the “Yu-Gi-Oh!” is “King of Games” which seems fitting. At times, the Spirit is also called “Dark Yugi” because when seen by Yugi’s friends, they have all said at times that “This Yugi seems older, more mature than normal.” This name is also fitting because Dark Yugi is a master of “Yami no Games” which are called “Shadow Games” in the English dub. These games usually end up with the losing player either dying, losing their soul, or they lose their mind.
So to surmise, this season’s Spirit is a 3000-year-old (5000-year-old in Season 1 of the English dub) master gambler from Ancient Egypt, who plays Shadow games, and is called “Yu-Gi-Oh!” or “Dark Yugi”.

Season 1
It is from this point that most people know. Season 1 happens after Season 0. In this Season, The Spirit is still very skilled at playing games, and only participates in a few Shadow Games. In the very first episode though, the Spirit does a “Mind Crush” at the end of his duel against Seto Kaiba. In Season 0 this would be considered as a “Penalty Game” That the Spirit would’ve done at the end of a Shadow Games. Despite the lack of death-by-Shadow-Game happening, the Spirit is ruthless in his playing style. Towards the end of the first season, Yugi starts to become more aware of the presence of the Spirit during duels, and at the end of the Duellist Kingdom tournament Yugi befriends the Spirit and asks him who he is. The Spirit responds saying that he can’t remember who he is, he has a feeling he’s got something to do with Ancient Egypt. Yugi then asks him what his name is, and the Spirit says “I have been known by many names. The ones I like are Yu-Gi-Oh! And Yami.” From this point on, Yugi decided to call the Spirit Yami. This is a link back to Season 0, because translated from the Japanese Kanji, Yami means Dark. Yami also befriends all of Yugi’s friends and his Grandpa.
So to surmise, This Season’s Spirit doesn’t start Shadow Games, has lost all his memories of his past and who he was, befriends Yugi and the rest of his friends and family, and says he has been called “Yu-Gi-Oh!” and “Yami” in the past.

Thanks for reading!! To be continued…
